Super Cedar — Byredo
Using a 10-category / 100-point Layerability Assessment Framework, I would score Byredo Super Cedar as a very strong layering fragrance, but for a somewhat different reason than Baccarat Rouge 540, Green Irish Tweed, or Roja Elysium.
Super Cedar is much more structurally focused: its cedar-centric woody character, softened by rose and musk facets, makes it particularly useful as a woody structure/texture layer. Its strength is not maximum versatility across every fragrance family, but its ability to give another perfume a clean, dry, polished woody backbone.

Overall Category: Very Strong Layering Potential
Why Super Cedar Scores Highly
1. Olfactory Harmony — 9/10
Cedar is one of the more useful woody materials for layering because it can connect with citrus, aromatics, florals, musks, amber, leather and other woods without necessarily creating an obvious clash.
Super Cedar's relatively clean construction makes it particularly useful when another fragrance needs a more defined woody foundation.
2. Versatility — 9/10
Despite its focused identity, Super Cedar can potentially work with a surprisingly broad range of fragrances:
- Citrus
- Aromatic
- Floral
- Musky
- Woody
- Amber
- Spicy
- Fruity
- Leather
Its greatest limitation is gourmand layering. It isn't naturally a sweetening or creamy-gourmand modifier, so I wouldn't give it 10/10.
3. Distinctive Identity — 8/10
Super Cedar has a very recognizable pencil-shaving / dry cedar / clean woody personality.
That's useful—but it can also become obvious in a combination.
This is why I would give it 8 rather than 9 or 10. The fragrance contributes a strong identity without being as compositionally dominant as something like BR540.
4. Note Compatibility — 9/10
Cedar provides an excellent bridge to:
woods + citrus + aromatics + musk + florals + amber.
It is particularly useful when another perfume feels somewhat diffuse and needs a clearer structural foundation.
5. Drydown Quality — 9/10
This is one of Super Cedar's strongest characteristics for layering.
The woody character remains useful as the fragrance develops, meaning it can continue functioning as a structural component rather than disappearing after the opening.
6. Projection Control — 9/10
This deserves a high score because Super Cedar can contribute noticeable character without necessarily overwhelming the other fragrance.
It is easier to dose than many powerful sweet/amber fragrances.
The important point is that projection control isn't the same thing as weak projection. A fragrance can be noticeable while remaining relatively easy to integrate.
7. Longevity Compatibility — 8/10
Its persistence is adequate for layering, particularly because the woody character can continue supporting a combination during the drydown.
I wouldn't give it 9–10 because the ideal longevity relationship depends considerably on the fragrance being paired with it.
8. Texture & Smoothness — 9/10
This is arguably Super Cedar's defining layering advantage.
It can contribute:
dryness + pencil-shaving cedar + smooth woods + clean musk + understated warmth.
That makes it an excellent texture modifier.
For example, a sweet perfume can become drier and more structured; a floral perfume can become more polished; a fresh perfume can gain a woody backbone.
9. Complementary Potential — 9/10
Super Cedar can potentially:
- Dry down a sweet fragrance
- Add structure to a floral
- Deepen a citrus fragrance
- Make a musk more woody
- Give an aromatic fragrance greater depth
- Add sophistication to a fruity fragrance
- Introduce contrast into a gourmand
- Strengthen the woody dimension of another perfume
This makes it highly useful for correction-style layering—using one fragrance to modify a specific characteristic of another.
10. Role Flexibility — 9/10
Super Cedar can work extremely well in both directions.
As a base:
It supplies the woody skeleton.
As an overlay:
It adds a dry, clean cedar facet to the fragrance underneath.
It therefore doesn't depend entirely on one particular layering role.
Base vs. Overlay
| Assessment | Score |
|---|---|
| Base Layerability | 90/100 |
| Overlay Layerability | 86/100 |
| Overall Layerability | 88/100 |
As a base — 90/100
This is where Super Cedar becomes particularly interesting.
It can establish:
dry woods + clean musk + cedar structure
before another perfume is added.
That makes it especially useful underneath fragrances that are sweet, floral, fruity, musky or relatively soft.
As an overlay — 86/100
Still very strong, but slightly less versatile in this role.
When applied over another fragrance, its distinctive cedar character can become quite noticeable. That's excellent when you want a woody transformation, but less useful when you're simply looking for an invisible supporting layer.
